To Plan Or Not To Plan?

I’m a natural Planner at heart. I love to be organized, plan things, research, make lists – for whatever may be in my life. But I also got that care-free wing-it personality too. Let’s say our last summer trip- we went to Alberta & British Columbia.  We obvisouly knew we only had a week, made a list of where we wanted to go and what we wanted to see, and a rough outline where we would be each day. However as we got to each place we kinda went with the flow for what activities we wanted to do and what hotels we would stay in.  We had a great time and did basically everything we wanted to do, an exception would be a few repeats from last year that we enjoyed but it’s ok we missed it this time around. My question to all of you is, Is it better to be planned and prepared for everything or leave some caution to the wind. My worry is that it would be cheaper to book hostels, flights beforehand and then you would be guaranteed that “cheap rate” and wouldn’t have to waste time finding a cheap yet decent hostel or coach surf when you get there.  I don’t want everything to be too planned- like if we decide we like a certain city and wanna stay it will probably cost fees to change hostel bookings for the next town. Also  if I don’t book any accomodation cheap places or places near where I want to be will probably be all or mostly booked up in the summer (europe) Am I thinking this out too much?  How to do you plan your long term travel? some things pre-booked and other things wing-it. Winging it usually works for me but sometimes it does not. Like the time me and Chad went to Minot, North Dakota for a shopping trip. It was summer and a weekend, so of course every hotel would be booked up. We thought well we will go to Bismarck and maybe there will be some hotels there… we were wrong no hotels.. there was a horrible rain storm- I went puddle jumping in the hugest puddles in the pouring rain, it was so fun. Then we headed back to Manitoba it was soo stormy – i’m pretty sure there was a tornado that night. We got home at around 6am. Moral of the story is- sometimes it is a good idea to book ahead of time and not wing-it.

Be The Change

Recently I went and volunteered for We Day in Winnipeg. Your probably thinking what the heck is “We Day” Well there are these two guys there names are Craig & Marc Kielburger– they are kinda my heroes :)  They started at a young age volunteering and trying to make a difference in the world, when Craig heard about children having to work in India and not being treated fairly and they couldn’t go to school. Well he decided to change that- people said it couldn’t be done, what could one kid do? He got together 11 friends- including his brother Marc and they did it. They eventually went on the build many schools and water systems in many countries from Kenya to China, to India and on! They have “Free The Children” , “Me To We” , Me To We Style” and “We Day” With all these social enterprises they are trying to inspire young people especially but anyone really that it is good to volunteer, raise awareness, and raise money for a cause of your choice. Whether it be cancer, a food drive in your city, or help build a school in Kenya.  Me to We means think less about yourself and more about others. I was so excited for We Day to come to Winnipeg, although Winnipeg is 2 hours away from where I live I was willing to do it! We day is to inspire youth to get involved, and let me tell you it is very inspiring.  You could sign up for different  teams: Seating, Parking & Transportation, Booths, and a few others. I chose Seating. We had to go in on the Monday to train from 4-9 . But it didn’t take that long we were done early, we helped but gift bags on the seats aswell. Wednesday the 23rd of November was the big day.  Me and my other person on my team were incharge of seating our section , answering any questions or helping in anyway. We also had to collect ballots because 1 student could win a volunteer trip of there choice, along with 4 friends and there teacher! We also got to watch the show. There was Much Music’s Sarah Taylor as a host, These speakers: Marc & Craig Kielburger, Mia Farrow, Rick Hansen, Al Gore, Paul Martin, Greg Sellinger, Spencer West,  Hannah Taylor, and a few more. There were performances such as: Hedley, Shawn Desmon, Everest, Down With Webster, and Sierra Noble. It was a very great and inspiring day. It was so great to see everyone so pumped up and inpired. There were 16,000 youth in attendance, and the admission was free; however, they had to have volunteered and raised money and awareness for a cause of there choice.

So Many Decisions!

The age old this-or-that. Suitcase or backpack, lug around my trusty old laptop or buy a cute netbook or even better a pretty macbook🙂 . Just take an ipod touch, or take my cell too.. or buy an unlocked cell… oh soo many questions. Please help🙂 In  a way it seems good to use the electronics you already have, that way if they die, you can buy new ones. But if you buy new ones firsthand you can have nice new, fast, small in size to travel around with.

Backpack or suitcase? – I prefer Suitcase on your more traditional holidays, but probably for traveling for a fair bit a backpack would be better.

Trusty old laptop or Netbook- I first off don’t really want to lug a laptop around, a cute little netbook would suffice for uploading pics and writing emails, although a dream would be to have a netbook, gotta save my travel funds though😉

I’ll def take my ipod touch with me for the music, i’m undecided on the phone though, I don’t want to be charged roaming fees, unless I can shut them off some how… but my phone isn’t unlocked, maybe buying a cheap unlocked phone would be ideal.

I def want a new cam for christmas- I just can’t decide what one, I love Canon and another one would be good, or a entry level dslr would be good, or that new Nikon looks nice aswell. Any tips on cameras?

Fall is here!

Brr here it is def getting colder where I am, the only thing I like about it is wearing ugg and emu boots haha. I am not a real fan of fall or winter, too cold for me. This weekend I just hung with my family, and spend no money! I was proud🙂 I actually made extra money on Friday, I sold a calculator online and got $50! I was happy haha.  I was discussing with my aunty on Saturday all the places we would like to travel. Originally a couple of us ( grandma, couple of aunties, my mom and I) were going to go to Minot, North Dakota for a weekend shopping trip in November. But my one aunt hasn’t send away for her passport yet, so we are unsure if she will get it in time. So then I told my aunty Minneapolis is only 9.5 hours away. She suggested in December we go to Minot for one night, Fargo for one night, and Minneapolis for a couple days. I was soo happy, no one else in my family shares my love of travel. My aunty wants to go to alot of the same places I do, and it’s fun to discuss all the things we want to do. She is also a inspiration to me as she has a good job, and is a very thrifty person lol, so i’m going to try and be like her, so I can save up. So hopefully everything goes as planned and we get to go on a mini road trip in the states.🙂

Hello all, welcome to my blog. I am new to word press- so please bare with me

Today it was a day off for me, so I cleaned, did dishes, and I put some postcards I had of Lake Louise, Banff, and Vancouver in these nice picture frames I got for my birthday and I hung them on the wall. They look great. I also am researching various blogs/websites and travbuddy for tips on my trip. If you have any tips on Europe or Australia please let me know, have a great day.
